Members notice two things right away: how the locker room smells and how the floor looks. Gyms, dance studios, martial arts schools and rec centers see heavy traffic every day, and the floors underneath are often a mix of rubber, wood, tile and mats that each need a different method.
Every night, after close
- Locker rooms and restrooms: clean and disinfect toilets, sinks, showers and benches; restock; mop with disinfectant.
- Workout and studio floors: dust-mop or vacuum, then the right damp method for the surface.
- Mirrors and glass: wiped down, especially the hand-height smudges.
- Front desk and lobby: counters, door handles, trash and floors.
- Touch points: cleared equipment handles and shared surfaces, as agreed with your staff.
Match the method to the floor
- Rubber flooring: vacuum first, then a cleaner made for rubber. The wrong chemicals leave it slick or break it down.
- Wood and sprung floors (dance, studios): dry methods and a barely-damp mop. Standing water is the enemy.
- Mats: cleaned and disinfected after use, dried before stacking.
- Tile and VCT (lobbies, halls, locker rooms): scrubbed regularly, with a finish schedule in the dry areas. See floor care vs. janitorial.
Weekly and periodic
- Machine-scrub locker room floors and grout.
- High dusting, vents and fans.
- Scrub and recoat lobby and hallway hard floors a few times a year; strip and refinish when the finish wears through.
Winter adds salt
From December through March, entries take in salt and slush that end up on every floor in the building. More frequent entry cleaning and good mats keep it off your workout floors. More in salt season floor care.
