Salt Season and Your Floors

Every winter in the Quad Cities, sidewalks and parking lots get salted, and whatever is on people's boots ends up on your floors. By January a lot of entries have a white haze that comes back an hour after mopping. That haze isn't just ugly. Left alone, it shortens the life of your floor finish and your carpet.

What salt actually does to a floor

Rock salt and ice melt arrive as grit and slush. Once the water evaporates, they leave a residue behind. A few things happen next:

Step 1: Stop it at the door

The cheapest salt to deal with is the salt that never gets past the entrance. Good matting does more for winter floors than anything a crew does at night.

Step 2: Clean the right way, often enough

Step 3: Protect the finish before the season starts

On VCT and other finished hard floors, the finish is a sacrificial layer. Salt grinds away at it instead of at the floor itself. Going into winter with a fresh scrub and recoat gives the floor more to lose before damage reaches the surface underneath. Fall is the time to schedule it.

Step 4: Recover in spring

Once the salt stops, look at the traffic lanes in daylight. Depending on how the winter went, the floor may need a deep scrub and recoat, or a full strip and refinish where the finish has worn through. Entry carpet usually needs a thorough extraction. Doing this every spring keeps a floor from slowly sliding to the point of replacement.

Signs your current plan isn't keeping up

One more conversation worth having

If someone else handles your snow and ice, talk to them about the area right outside your doors. Salt applied heavily on the walk next to the entrance is salt that ends up inside. Clear walks and good matting work together.

Fortis schedules floor care as its own service, separate from nightly cleaning, so winter recovery actually happens. If your entry is already losing the fight this year, we can walk it with you and put a plan in writing.
